This week, Bespoken Bureau is excited to announce our newest exclusive speaker: Julien Christian Lutz, professionally known as (PKA) Director X.
Moody lighting. Minimalistic design. Unmistakable dance moves. Nearly anyone can recognize Drake’s “Hotline Bling” music video. Besides going viral when it came out in 2015, the video won Best Hip-Hop Video at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, is one of Youtube’s 80 most viewed videos, and helped the song itself reach number 2 and 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and win Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 2017 ceremony. It’s one of Julien’s most popular videos.
Some of Julien’s other notable music videos include: Sean Paul’s “Gimme the Light,” Usher’s “Yeah!,” and Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend.” Julien has also directed commercials for Apple Music, Ebay, Virginia Black, and Gap’s noteworthy “Meet Me In The Gap” campaign; and is the director of three feature films: Across the Line, Center Stage: On Pointe, and Superfly.
In addition to being an award-winning director, Julien is one of the creators of Operation Prefrontal Cortex (OPC), a community partnership and resource for mindfulness and meditation strategies that can bring about change. OPC works to bring meditation into key areas—schools, correctional facilities, community programs, police forces, and youth engaged in street violence—and is the result of Julien’s personal experience with gun violence.
After he was injured in a club shooting, Julien was angry. “I was angry at the culture—our culture—that promotes killers and killing,” he says. “A culture that I helped promote.” Alongside that anger came a deep introspection. He began to take a look at the root causes of gun violence and illuminating discoveries in the field of neuroscience. He learned that improving mental health through mindfulness strategies can have an extraordinarily positive impact on human behaviour.
Julien’s talks hit on the subjects he is most passionate about, and that can make a real difference in your organization: creativity, innovation, wellness, and community. His keynotes show us how bettering ourselves and those around us is the key to ensuring a more peaceful, compassionate world.
Making Art Go Viral: How Julien Christian Lutz Became a Creative Icon
You know when you’re watching a Julien Christian Lutz music video—they’re unmistakable. The lighting is moody and stylized. The dancers are deliberately placed. The movement is fluid and evocative. The visual style is graphic and bold. This is creativity at work—no matter the artist, Julien’s vision comes through.
In this talk, Julien tells his story—from starting as an intern to becoming an icon of his industry. He shares his creative process and what he’s learned from collaborating with some of the world’s top artists. Any organization can learn from his approach to innovation: understand everything you can about every facet of your business, work hard, and take as much responsibility for failure as you would for success. Take risks. Make a statement. “You really have to make something people pay attention to,” says Julien. “You really have to go for it, man. If you want people to notice, you have to go that extra mile.”
Changing Community, Improving Lives: The Power of Mindfulness with Julien Christian Lutz
In 2015, famed music video director Julien Christian Lutz was hosting a New Year’s Eve party when a gunshot rang out. The bullet went through two others before hitting the iconic music video director, landing him in the hospital. That night, Julien asked himself: “What would make someone do something like that?” In his journey to learn more about gun violence, Julien discovered a cache of important scientific research: the relationship between the brain, decision-making, mindfulness, and meditation. He learned that mindfulness and meditation can have an extraordinarily positive impact on human behaviour—and so his program Operation Prefrontal Cortex was born.
